What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts placed in the jawbone to replace missing teeth. A connecting abutment joins the implant to a crown, bridge or full-arch restoration, designed to look and work like natural teeth.

Treatment Options

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery is gradual. The hospital gives you a written aftercare plan, and your dental surgeon confirms the timings for you.

  1. After Surgery

Some swelling and tenderness is common for a few days. The hospital gives you written aftercare instructions and, where needed, temporary teeth.

  2. Healing Period

The implants bond with your jawbone over several months, usually while you are back home in the UK. The hospital advises you on eating and cleaning.

  3. Fitting Your Teeth

Once healing has been checked, you return to the hospital to have your permanent crowns, bridge or full arch fitted.

What Happens Before Treatment?

A qualified dentist should take your full health and dental history, examine your mouth and assess X-rays or a CBCT scan where clinically necessary. Gum disease, uncontrolled medical conditions, smoking and insufficient bone may affect treatment planning. Ask about alternative options, expected visits and maintenance obligations.

Recovery, Ongoing Care and Risks

Tenderness, swelling and bruising can follow surgery. Potential complications include infection, damage to neighbouring structures, nerve or sinus problems, failure of the implant to integrate with bone, peri-implant disease and wear or loosening of components. Long-term success needs daily cleaning and regular review by a dental professional, and you may need to pay a UK dentist for maintenance or emergency treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to provide long-term support. Their longevity depends on oral hygiene, smoking habits, gum health, regular dental maintenance and overall health. With proper care, many implants continue functioning successfully for many years.

  • Is the procedure painful?

Implant placement is usually performed under local anaesthesia, meaning the treatment area is numbed during the procedure. After treatment, temporary swelling, tenderness or discomfort may occur, but this is generally manageable and often improves over the following days.

  • How long is the treatment process?

After the implant is placed, it integrates with the surrounding bone over several months before the final crown, bridge or prosthesis is attached. Many implant restorations involve two visits with healing between stages. Every treatment plan is unique, and timelines may vary.

  • Can anyone get dental implants?

Many healthy adults may be considered for implant treatment. Factors that are often assessed include general health, oral health, gum condition, bone availability, smoking habits and medical history. Age alone does not usually prevent someone from being considered. Suitability can only be determined through a clinical assessment and appropriate imaging.

  • How do I care for my implants?

Brush regularly, clean around the implants, attend routine check-ups and follow professional maintenance recommendations. Proper care contributes significantly to long-term success.

  • Are crowns included in the implant price?

Not necessarily. The hospital’s price list shows implants and crowns as separate items; ask for a complete itemised quotation.

  • Are flights and hotel included?

Hotel accommodation is already included in the hospital’s listed All-on-4 and Hollywood Smile packages, for the stated stay durations. It is not included with separately priced individual dental items. Flights are not included in the listed prices but may be added through a separate hospital quotation.

  • Can implants fail?

Yes. Integration and prosthetic components can fail; risks depend on health, oral hygiene and clinical factors.
