What is a Tummy Tuck?

An abdominoplasty removes some excess skin and tissue from the abdomen and may include tightening separated abdominal muscles. It is not a weight-loss operation and does not replace healthy weight management. It is major surgery that leaves permanent scars and needs a meaningful recovery period.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini abdominoplasty generally targets excess tissue below the belly button and may involve a smaller incision.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full abdominoplasty can address broader loose skin and may involve repositioning the belly button and repairing separated abdominal muscles. Neither option is automatically better; the right one depends on your anatomy and goals. Liposuction is a different procedure and should not be assumed to be included.

Who Might Be Considered?

Some patients consider surgery after pregnancy or substantial weight change. The surgeon evaluates weight stability, overall fitness, previous abdominal operations, risk of poor healing, smoking, future pregnancy plans and expectations. If your weight is still changing or you plan a pregnancy, postponing surgery may be appropriate. Other procedures, or no surgery, may be reasonable alternatives.

Planning the Operation

The clinical team should discuss incision and scar position, whether abdominal wall tightening is appropriate, whether drains or compression garments are likely, the length of hospital stay and the activities you must avoid. A responsible consultation includes an anaesthetic and blood-clot risk assessment, a clear explanation of the procedure and time to reconsider.

Recovery and Time Away from Work

Recovery usually involves significant restrictions on lifting, exercise and sometimes driving. NHS guidance suggests around four to six weeks off work and exercise for many people, depending on their job and operation. Swelling and numbness may last longer, and compression garments may be recommended. Your surgeon’s instructions take priority over a general timeline.

Risks and Complications

Possible risks include infection, bleeding, fluid collections (seroma), haematoma, wound separation, poor scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation, skin or tissue problems, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and anaesthetic complications. Some patients are unhappy with the cosmetic result or need further surgery. Discuss your personal risk factors with the surgeon.

Staying in Turkey and Returning Home

A tummy tuck needs planned monitoring after surgery. Being discharged does not mean you are medically fit to fly, and travelling soon after surgery can complicate recovery and raise concerns about blood clots. Confirm the follow-up reviews, whether a companion is recommended, the minimum recommended stay, who treats a wound problem, what costs apply if travel is delayed and how to get urgent care in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is a tummy tuck a way to lose weight?

No. It is primarily intended to remove excess skin and reshape the abdominal area. It is not a substitute for weight-loss treatment.

  • What is the difference between a mini and full tummy tuck?

The extent of skin removal, muscle work, scar and treatment area differs. Your surgeon should explain which, if either, is appropriate.

  • Will I have scars?

Yes. All tummy tuck procedures leave scars, and full procedures usually involve a longer scar, sometimes with one around the navel.

  • How long does recovery take?

Many people need roughly four to six weeks away from work and exercise, but medical advice and individual recovery can alter this.

  • Does a tummy tuck include liposuction?

Not necessarily. If discussed, liposuction must be expressly included in the clinical plan and final quotation.

  • Are flights and hotel included?

The hospital’s listed tummy tuck price includes airport transfers and accommodation. Flights are arranged separately, and the timing of your flight home needs your surgeon’s agreement.
