Breast Surgery: Making an Informed Decision

Breast surgery may be considered to change breast size, shape or position, or to address discomfort caused by breast weight. Common operations include breast augmentation (implants), breast uplift (mastopexy) and breast reduction. Each has different indications, scars, outcomes and long-term care needs. Surgery should be considered only after an individual assessment by an appropriately qualified surgeon.

CureMed does not carry out surgery, select implant sizes or recommend an operation for you. We can help you ask for a consultation with our partner private hospital in Izmir, Turkey. Your surgeon must explain realistic benefits, risks and alternatives, and whether you are suitable.

Breast Augmentation (Implants)

Breast augmentation usually uses implants to increase or restore breast volume. The surgeon considers your anatomy, skin quality and goals when discussing implant size, shape, surface, placement and incision location. Implants are not lifetime devices: some patients need further imaging, procedures, removal or replacement in the future.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

An uplift reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple-areola complex to address drooping. It can be done without implants, although some patients discuss combined procedures. A lift leaves permanent scars, which usually fade over time but do not disappear completely.

Breast Reduction

Reduction surgery removes excess tissue and skin to reduce breast size and may help some people whose breast weight contributes to discomfort. Results, nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed may change. The treating surgeon will discuss the chosen technique and its possible effects.

Who May Be Suitable?

Assessment includes medical history, current health, smoking, medication, previous breast surgery, breast screening, family history, pregnancy or breastfeeding plans and expectations. Some medical conditions, weight changes or planned pregnancies may lead the surgeon to advise delaying or avoiding an operation. An examination may be needed before an accurate plan or quote is issued.

Consultation and Planning

Ask which procedure is indicated and why, whether implants are proposed and which brand and type, where scars will be placed, whether a combined procedure is appropriate, how long hospital observation is needed and which team provides aftercare. Your surgeon should explain the specific risks to nipple sensation, breastfeeding, symmetry and future screening, including the possible need for repeat procedures with implants.

Risks and Complications

All operations carry risks related to anaesthesia, infection, bleeding, blood clots and wound healing. Breast surgery can also involve significant scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation, delayed healing, an unsatisfactory result and the need for revision surgery. Implants add risks such as capsular contracture, rupture and rare implant-associated conditions, including breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Discuss monitoring and possible future implant removal or replacement with your surgeon.

Recovery and Returning to the UK

Recovery depends on the operation. Pain, bruising, swelling, restricted lifting and a supportive bra may be expected, and many patients need at least one to two weeks away from work after augmentation, with longer restrictions on strenuous activity. Breast reduction or combined surgery can involve different recovery needs. Do not assume you are fit to fly on the day of discharge. Confirm your surgeon’s flight clearance, the recommended stay in Turkey, dressings, wound reviews and a plan for urgent problems after you return to the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between augmentation, lift and reduction?

Augmentation adds volume, a lift raises and reshapes breast tissue, and reduction removes tissue and skin. A surgeon may recommend different or combined procedures only after assessment.

  • Are breast implants permanent?

Implants are not lifetime devices. Some patients require additional monitoring, removal or replacement surgery, and outcomes vary.

  • Will there be visible scars?

Yes. Incisions leave scars, and their position and appearance depend on the operation, healing and individual characteristics.

  • Will surgery affect breastfeeding?

It can. The risk depends on the technique and individual circumstances and should be discussed with your surgeon before surgery.

  • How long should I stay in Turkey?

The surgeon and hospital must confirm the required post-operative observation, reviews and when flying home is medically appropriate.

  • Are hotel and flights included in the price?

The hospital’s listed breast surgery prices include airport transfers and accommodation. Flights are arranged separately. The individual written quotation must list all inclusions and exclusions.
